SPLC sues neo-Nazi leader who targeted Jewish woman in anti-Semitic harassment campaign

(https://www.splcenter.org/news/2017/04/18/splc-sues-neo-nazi-leader-who-targeted-jewish-woman-anti-semitic-harassment-campaign \ Andrew Anglin, one of the founders of The Daily Stormer, launched a “troll storm” against a Montanan a Jewish Real Estate agent . Tanya Gersh, of Whitefish, Montana, and her family have received over 700 messages. Gersh’s abuse began after another alt-right leader, Richard Spencer, accused her of extorting money from his mother. Gersh is suing Anglin for harassment, invasion of privacy, and emotional distressed caused by Anglin’s army of trolls. The Daily Stormer, is one of the most popular and widely read antisemtic websites. Websites such as this have been responsible for harassment and intimidation of numerous minorities and individuals like Gersh. Anglin posted an article on the website with the headline, “Jews Targeting Richard Spencer’s Mother for Harassment and Extortion – TAKE ACTION!” In addition the article linked pictures of Gersh and her family, along with her contact information. Obviously, the fact that a woman and her family was unfairly targeted and harassed is a sad and wrong thing. However, this is one of the few cases where someone responsible for hate speech, harassment, and intimidation is actually being held responsible. So while this whole incidence is completely unnecessary and unprovoked, at least some sort of justice will be made. Unfortunately, this website and other similar sites will continue to do things like this, but perhaps if consequences for such actions are taken, people like Anglin will think twice about what they write.   Southern Poverty Law Center, No author, April 18th, 2017, Alt-right/hates peech, Whitefish,...

Ted Nugent Invited to the White House

Washed-up wacko rocker Ted Nugent visited the White House Wednesday, April 19 alongside Sarah Palin and Kid Rock. The tour of the house was then followed by an intimate dinner with the President. Nugent, having once been investigated by the secret service for posting threatening and hate filled messages about former President Obama on social media, was welcomed the White House with open arms despite his consistent racism and anti-Semitism. Nugent has a long history of ranting on twitter about whatever bigoted statements are running around his head. He has posted complaints about the Jews taking away his guns, as well as having continuously attacked Obama and Hilary Clinton, making himself look like a cyber-bullying high-school aged conspiracy theorist hate monger. His online propaganda has hit both twitter and Facebook, so intensely that he was visited by secret service agents to investigate the threats he made against the former leader of the free world. Ted Nugent has a right to say and post whatever he wants, despite ruining his reputation to anyone with common sense. The NRA member’s status flipped drastically in the span of a year: at one time regarded by our government as a potential security threat, and at another an honored guest of our current President. As stated, Nugent can say and do what he wants, but under no circumstances should such a man ever be welcomed to spend time and dine with the President of the United States in his home. Trump inviting Nugent speaks volumes to his morals and what kinds of company he likes to keep. Although, Trump and his cabinet do have a...

Hitler ‘Birthday Party’ Thrown at the University of Oregon

According to a local CBS station for Eugene, Oregon, a pair of self-proclaimed white nationalist men caused a campus uproar at the University of Oregon on the morning of April 20th as they attempted to celebrate the birthday of Adolf Hitler. Two men, Jimmy Marr and ‘Chad’, reportedly parked a swastika-emblazoned truck in the heart of campus while promoting a Holocaust denial film. On the tailgate of the truck was a message that read: “No more terror. No more war. America, stop being Israel’s whore” (News Staff). According to the Eugene Weekly, Jimmy Marr—owner of the truck—is well known as a racist and antisemite and his truck has repeatedly been seen around Oregon displaying messages such as “Jews Lies Matter” and “Trump: Do the White Thing” (Nguyen). When Marr and his friend appeared on campus to supposedly throw Hitler a ‘birthday party,’ officers did not engage the men, but members of the campus community were photographed shouting at the men and attempting to debate their presence. Rabbi Jack Melul—director of the Jewish educational and social group Akiva on campus—even sang “The Jewish people are still alive” in Hebrew while Marr and Chad were engaged in an argument with students. After about 45 minutes on campus, the pair voluntarily drove away and their leave was met with applause. According to campus police, the pair acted within the legal boundaries of free speech and their truck was parked legally. Despite the fact that there were no other physical ‘birthday parties’ thrown in Adolf Hitler’s honor, Forward reports that many neo-nazis took to the internet in celebration of the dictator’s birthday on...

Antisemitic Flyers disseminated in Brooklyn

An April 17th, 2017 article by Forward stated that a man driving through the area of Williamsburg, on his motorcycle, threw antisemitic flyers all over the street at night. In addition to the dissemination of physical copies, an anonymous source also uploaded the image online. The flyer harshly illustrates many of the antisemitic stereotypes that we have discussed over the semester. It shows Holocaust related messages including images of swastikas, references to gas chambers, and it also has Holocaust denial phrases. The flyer has a bolded sentence that says “Question: How Long can the Jews Perpetuate the Holocaust Myth?” The flyer also illustrates old stereotypes, such as Jews having large noses and that they are a race of “born nation wreckers!.” Anti-zionism can be seen in the top left corner of the page. It depicts Israeli cynically looking at a Palestinian child, while other Palestinians are being held captive in a “Gaza Ghetto”. The flyer also calls Jews “kikes” and says that the Jews are ruining “white culture” all over the world because they are pumping their myths and lies into it. According to the article, Williamsburg is home to a large population of Orthodox European Jews. The perpetrator of the act was not identified because they were wearing a dark black helmet. However, it is clear that who ever did this put a lot of time into it because it looks like all of the images are hand drawn. This flyer is probably one of the most graphic and threatening form of antisemitic graffiti I have seen over the semester. It illustrates almost every form of antisemitism we have seen ranging from...

Jared Kushner Under Antisemitic Twitter Attack

The ADL reports, Jared Kushner, the American real estate investor and developer, or more popularly known as the son-in-law and senior advisor to Donald Trump has become a massive target of antisemitism of Twitter recently. A majority of these tweets flagged by the ADL claims that Kushner has played a part in manipulating Trump and further pushing the Unites States into war for the benefit of Israel. Some of these tweets can be linked back to popular antisemites like David Duke and Richard Spencer. With the hashtag #FireKushner both Duke and Spencer tweeted post such as, “#FireKushner No one voted for Kushner. Indeed, many of us voted against people like Kushner having power.” And further,  “We are being brought down from within. ZIO [Zionist] Supremacists are the true enemy of the American people… not Assad, not Putin. #FireKushner.” (Twitter) These claims, like most claims made by these men, is used to rile up followers and further support their antisemitic agenda. The majority of the tweets surround the recent context of a feud in the White House between Kushner and Stephen Bannon. The feud involved Bannon connection to the site Breitbart News, a site in which Kushner claimed to be “the platform for the alt-right.” As Bannon has becoming increasingly unpopular, The Jerusalem Post reports “white supremacists have responded in a number of ways from claiming Kushner is a front man for Trump’s white nationalist views to smearing him as a nefarious adviser who controls Trump.” (JTA) This makes me think back to our discussion on the changing faces of antisemitism, and how it can be used to supports various agendas...

Neo-Nazi Blames Jared Kushner for America’s Strike on Syria

On April 10th, 2017, an article published by Haaretz discussed that Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump’s Judaism has become a target for alt-right groups. Until now, it has seemed like Jared and Ivanka’s faith has been somewhat of a taboo subject. However, things began to change last week when it came to light that there appears to be a growing feud between Steve Bannon and Jared Kushner. As noted in a blog post from last week, Bannon referred to Kushner as a “globalist” after he was removed from the National Security Council. Last Tuesday after Trump ordered to attack a Syrian Army base with Tomahawk missiles, many people on the far right began blaming Kushner for initiating the attacks on the behalf of Israel. On Saturday, Alt- Right leader, Richard Spencer, led a demonstration in front of the White House with signs that read “No more wars 4 Israel” (Haaretz). Preceding the protest, on April 7th , Spencer tweeted out ” #FireKushner No one voted for him. Indeed, many of us voted against people like Kushner having power” (Twitter of Richard Spencer). It is clear that when Spencer said “people like Kushner..” he was referring to Jewish people.  According to the article, other people in the alt-right have also accused Ivanka as being behind the President’s decision to launch the attack against Syria.  On the radio show “Infowars, alt-righter Alex Jones, stated that “It’s them, it’s them – it’s his daughter and son-in-law who are literally enemies of the republic!” (Haaretz). This not only relates to many of the potent anti-Jewish stereotypes that we have learned about throughout the semester, like how Jews...
